ONE BILLION RISING is a powerful global campaign to raise awareness and stop violence against women, and to help heal women and men around the world. The campaign highlights the fact that violence against women is a global human issue, present in every culture of the world.
Every February 14, we rise – in hundreds of countries across the world – to show the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. We rise through dance to express joy and community and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence.
We rise to show we are determined to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable. Together we are creating a global culture that teaches our boys & men to respect women & girls, and to speak out against “rape culture” that condones gender based violence, blames victims and defends abusers. We are creating a culture that values compassion and prioritizes support for targets of sexual violence. This year we are rising for REVOLUTION.
There are events all around the world, however if your city is not holding a gathering, or if you are unable to attend, JOIN IN, as an online community, to RISE UP & DANCE in “virtual” solidarity with all the events across the planet.

“Dance is dangerous, joyous, sexual, holy, disruptive, contagious, it breaks the rules. It can happen anywhere, anytime, with anyone and everyone, and it’s free. Dancing insists we take up space, we go there together in community…”Break The Chain” is the anthem that will call up one billion to rise.” – Eve Ensler, Founder of V-Day
“If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of your revolution.” – Emma Goldman

ABOUT THE ONE BILLION RISING CAMPAIGN:
One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action in human history. The campaign began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.
On 14 February 2013, people across the world came together to express their outrage, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women. Last year, on 14 February 2014, One Billion Rising for Justice focused on the issue of justice for all survivors of gender violence, and highlighted the impunity that lives at the intersection of poverty, racism, war, the plunder of the environment, capitalism, imperialism, and patriarchy. Events took place in 200 countries, where women, men, and youth came together to Rise, Release, and Dance outside of court houses, police stations, government offices, school administration buildings, work places, sites of environmental injustice, military courts, embassies, places of worship, homes, or simply public gathering places where women deserve to feel safe but too often do not. The campaign was covered widely by media in all corners of world including The New York Times, The Guardian, NPR, and many more. www.onebillionrising.org.
